Getting started & goals
How does setup work?
Setup takes about two minutes: your goal (cut, lean bulk, recomp or maintain), body stats, activity level and how many days you train. Vitalume builds your calorie and macro targets, and a first-run tour shows you how to log your first meal with the coach. You can skip setup and finish it later from the Profile tab.
Can I change my goal later?
Yes. Open Profile → Goal to switch between cut, lean bulk, recomposition and maintenance. Targets are recalculated immediately and the coach adjusts its advice from the next message on.
Can I set my own calorie or macro targets?
Yes. Profile → Targets lets you override calories, protein, carbs and fat. The coach will respect your numbers, but will tell you if they are aggressive for your goal.
How does Vitalume decide my calorie target?
It starts from your estimated TDEE, applies a deficit or surplus appropriate to your goal, and then learns from your actual weight trend: if you are losing faster or slower than expected over two to three weeks, targets are nudged so you stay on track without crash-dieting.
Does Vitalume support GLP-1 users?
Vitalume keeps protein high and tracks strength so you preserve muscle while losing weight, which is the number-one concern for people on GLP-1 medication. It does not give medical advice about your medication; please follow your prescriber’s guidance.
Logging food
How do I log food with a photo?
Tap the camera in the coach, snap your plate, and Vitalume identifies each item, estimates portions and logs the meal. Tap any item to adjust the portion or swap the food.
Can I log by talking?
Yes. Hold the microphone and describe your meal naturally: “two eggs, toast with butter, half an avocado”. The coach parses it, logs it and confirms the totals.
Does it scan barcodes and nutrition labels?
Yes. Barcodes resolve against a global product database, and label mode reads the nutrition panel directly for exact values. Both are unlimited on the free plan.
Why are AI estimates sometimes different from the label?
A photo cannot see hidden oil, sauces or exact weights, so estimates are estimates. Vitalume grounds every result in a verified database and shows a confidence hint. When exact numbers matter, use a barcode, a label scan or the food scale entry.
Can I log meals for another day or time?
Yes. Tell the coach “that was yesterday’s dinner”, or open any day from Progress and add an entry there. Each entry has a meal slot you can change.
Does Vitalume know regional foods?
Yes. The database and the recogniser cover South Asian, Middle Eastern, East Asian, Latin American, African and European dishes, from biryani and dal to shawarma, pho and tamales.
Can I save recipes and favourite meals?
Yes. Any logged meal can be saved as a favourite or turned into a recipe with per-serving macros. Favourites appear as one-tap chips in the coach.
Does it track fibre, sugar or micronutrients?
Fibre, sugar, sodium and saturated fat are tracked on every entry. A full micronutrient panel is on the roadmap.
Training & recovery
What does the training side include?
A full exercise library with video guidance, workout logging with a rest timer (phone and Apple Watch), PR tracking, weekly volume, and, on Pro, a training coach that builds and adapts your programme to your goal and schedule.
What is readiness?
A daily 0–100 score built from your sleep, resting heart rate, HRV and recent training load. High readiness means go heavy; low readiness means the coach suggests a lighter session and may shift a few calories toward recovery.
What is the “closed loop”?
Recovery shapes your training load, training load shapes your nutrition targets, and the coach explains every change. Most apps handle one of those; Vitalume connects all three so the advice is consistent.
Is there an Apple Watch app?
Yes. The Vitalume watch app starts today's session from your wrist, logs sets with the Digital Crown, runs the rest timer with haptics, records heart rate through the workout, and shows your calorie ring, macros and readiness. Complications put calories, readiness, today's workout and weight on your watch face.
Are there home-screen widgets?
Yes. Four iOS widgets in small, medium and lock-screen sizes: calories left with the ring and macros, readiness with the recovery band, today's workout with a one-tap start, and your weight trend. Each one deep-links straight into the right screen.
Which wearables work?
Anything that writes to Apple Health or Health Connect: Apple Watch, Garmin, Oura, WHOOP, Fitbit, Polar, Samsung Galaxy Watch, Google Pixel Watch and more.
Are burned calories added back to my target?
On Pro, active energy from your wearable adjusts your daily target conservatively (you never “eat back” the full number). You can turn this off in Profile → Targets.
The AI coach
What can I ask the coach?
Anything about your nutrition, training and recovery: “what should I eat tonight with 600 kcal left?”, “swap today to a rest day”, “why did my weight jump?”, “give me a high-protein vegetarian lunch”. It has your full context, so answers are specific to you.
Does the coach give medical advice?
No. Vitalume is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat or advise on medical conditions or medication. Please consult a qualified professional for anything medical.
Which AI models power the coach?
A mix of on-device recognition and leading large language models, routed per task for accuracy and speed. Your data is never used to train third-party models.
Can the coach make a meal plan?
Yes. Tell it your cuisine, budget, cooking time and what is in your fridge, and it builds a plan that fits your remaining targets, and logs it when you eat it.
Progress & data
How is my weight trend calculated?
Daily weigh-ins are smoothed into a trend line so a salty dinner or a hard workout does not look like fat gain. The trend, not the daily number, drives target adjustments.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Profile → Export gives you a CSV of every food log, workout and body metric.
How do I delete my account?
Profile → Settings → Delete account removes your account and every piece of data associated with it, immediately and permanently.
